Woodside lies between Downtown Dartmouth and Eastern Passage. It's a well-established neighbourhood with centuries of history, but it's often overlooked by homebuyers. But with a dozen friendly eateries, easy access to Halifax via the Woodside Ferry, the main NSCC campus, and character to spare, this up-and-coming neighbourhood is a wise investment and a lovely place to call home.
Many gracious older homes line Pleasant Street and its side streets, moving away from Downtown, and traces of an older Dartmouth emerge. Small locally-owned business crop up - tiny pharmacies, small machinist shops, one-lift mechanics, an independent gast station - and white clapboard churches are thick on the ground. The venerable John's Lunch perches at the top of the Woodside Ferry parking lot, and after you finish your world class clams, you can take in a cut-throat game of bocce at the Dartmouth Lawn Bowling Club.
But just because the mid-century is on clear display here, don't be fooled into thinking that the 21st century as neglected Woodside. Far from it! Along this same stretch of Pleasant Street you'll find Dartmouth General, the Nova Scotia Hospital, and the ultra-sustainable waterfront campus of Nova Scotia Community College. Connecting the three campuses is Woodside Area Regional Park, with several kilometers of Trans-Canada Trail running along the waterfront of Halifax Harbour. Woodside is also home to Innovacorp, the province's award-winning venture capital fund for start-ups.
Woodside has lots of Cozy, post-war era homes, with neighborly front porches, tide hedges, and private backyards. They evoke a white picket fence nostaligia, but they're also the perfect blank slate onto which new homeowners can project their own personalities and tastes. Cedar shingles a cottact style garden wouldn't look out of place on Marvin Street, but neither would an ultra-modern matte black steel and glass renovation. What's more, several streets boast affordable harbour view, uncluttered by shipyards or hotels - an impossible luxury on the other side of the Harbour.
Another deighful luxury is the culinary renassance of Woodside. Here you'll find the original locations of both Cheese Curds (gormet burgers) and Habañeros (modern tacos), and just steps away is Birdie's Bread Company (sourdough breads from local grains). And for comfort food, the aformentioned John's Lunch is a heart-warming local insitution. Nearby, the John's Lunch crew has launched Pleasant Street Diner, with an expanded menu and more seating.
Commuting in and out of Woodside is very convenient. The Woodside Ferry has a generous parking lot, and delivers commuters directy onto Upper Water Street in Halifax. The Bi-Hi (aka Highway of Heroes) delivers workers to Burnside Industrial Park, the Mic Mac Mall, or Dartmouth Crossing in about 10 minutes, and the commute to Shearwater is shorter still.
Woodside is ripe for discovery, and it won't be this affordable forever. If you're looking for your first home, a long-term family home, or an investment property, let Century 21 Trident Realty show you the Woodside we're passionate about.
