Crichton Park and Albro Lake form one of the smallest neighbourhoods in Dartmouth, but it’s clearly one of the city’s most distinctive and desirable. Located in Dartmouth’s north end, backing onto the Brightwood Golf Course on one side, and Mic Mac Mall on the other, Crichton Park lives up to its leafy name. It looks and feels like a park in so many ways.
The broad streets twist and curl around the south-facing hills, and the canopy of trees is so broad that sounds are muted, and unexpected summer rain showers won’t ruin a nighttime stroll. As befits so a tranquil neighbourhood, Crichton Park is filled with homes that are lovingly maintained. Many are architecturally striking, and you can see that homeowners have taken pride in ownership to the next level. Others have been expanded and updated with an eye to modern sensibilities while maintaining their original charm. Others remain just as they were, for they were built to last making fine homes exactly as they are, or servicing and inspiration for DIY renovators. More recent construction has also provided Crichton Park with some small, choice condominiums.
You’ll also find a handful of grand Victorian residences, built to take in the cool breezes and pleasant views from Lakes Micmac and Banook. It’s a neighbourhood that rewards exploration. Well-built rock walls and glimpses of shady grottoes give it a secret garden feeling.
Birch Cove Park sits at the foot of Crichton Park, and it’s a beauty. Long, gorgeous Lake Banook has hosted world canoe championships at various levels over the years, so Birch Cove is nicely developed, with a terrific beach, walking paths, and picnic sites adding to the area’s cachet.
These neighbourboods also abut Brightwood Golf & Country Club, renowned for its rolling fairways, small undulating greens and amazing views of the Halifax Harbour. Even if you’re not a duffer, golf courses offer the surrounding streets a well-manicured backdrop. And of course, in such a varied neighbourhood, there are a couple of elementary schools – Harbouriew and Crichton Park Schools – and Dartmouth High are just a few minutes' walk.
Nearby, Albro Lake was developed after the Second World War. You can still find plenty of starter homes on cozy lots near Halifax Habrour, becoming duplexes and mid-century single-family homes along quiet streets as you approach the lake, which is home to a lovely playground and swimming area, and well-stocked with trout during the summer. Just past the lake, Lancaster Ridge is one of the newer developments in the Twin Cities, with exclusive access to Cyril Smith Golden Acres Park.
Both Albro Lake and Crichton Park are centrally-located, just minutes from Dartmouth’s two best shopping districts at Mic Mac Mall and Dartmouth Crossing. Access to Burnside or either bridge to Halifax is just minutes away, and Bedford via the #7 isn’t much farther. And of course, there’s easy access to all amenities, including a choice of grocery stores and pharmacies.
